Here you will find a DSC Comment Letter addressing school climate and inclusive school discipline practices in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
DSC calls on the Chairman and Committee members to address discriminatory discipline practices that are disproportionately impacting students of color, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ-identifying students and pushing them out of school. These exclusionary discipline practices, including suspensions and expulsions for minor misbehavior, are taking students out of the classroom, resulting in lost instruction time and disengagement from the learning environment. These practices fuel the School-to-Prison Pipeline.
