Information for Parents on Functional Behavioral Assessment

Fact Sheet
Jordan, Dixie, “Functional Behavioral Assessment and Positive Interventions: What Parents Need to Know,” Pacer Center.

This brief was designed to help parents understand how problem behaviors are assessed in schools so that they can work more collaboratively with their child’s school and teachers during the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) process. The brief summarizes key concepts that are central to disability law and positive behavioral intervention strategies. It describes a FBA as a means by which educators can learn what causes behaviors and develop positive behavioral interventions that teach students to manage their own behaviors. This brief emphasizes that using a FBA to identify challenging behaviors and then designing interventions to deter those behaviors, supports the notion that the behavior is the problem, not the child.
