Youth Justice Coalition – History of Public Education and Who has benefitted 1600-2011

Download the Slides

In this extensive 133-page PowerPoint, the Youth Justice Coalition illustrates the direct and indirect ties of the history of public education to christianity, capitalism, colonization and patriotism. This work makes a strong case for how our public education system has been used as a means of social control throughout history, from America’s “Founding Fathers” and slave owners until today. It also shares a history of how communities have resisted social control and sought to promote public education as a means of liberation.
