Day 7: Ensure a Positive School Climate for All!

Today on social media, we are using the hashtags #DSCWoA2017 #ESSA4SchoolClimate and focusing on National Demand #4:  Make sure states and districts focus on school climate under the new federal law – the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Examples of events across the country today include:

In Los Angeles, California, CADRE will be hosting their shadow report release, with Black and Latino parents reflecting on the 10-year anniversary of the implementation of School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports in LA public schools. In the Bronx, New York, Sistas and Brothas United will hold a Showcase Exhibition starting at 6:30pm at 2751 Grand Concourse that will educate community members and bring awareness to the current school to prison pipeline issues, helping young people and community members reflect critically on the ways in which our school system implements discipline and its disproportionately negative impact on youth of color. The Showcase will also invite guests and visitors to contribute to alternative ways in which behavioral infractions, conflict, and even violence may be dealt with in holistic, student-centered and asset-based approaches within our schools. In Portland, Oregon, Resolutions Northwest’s RJ Young Folks and Portland Parent Union parents march together in solidarity against push out. Students will run their own program against push out at Morning Star Church. March will start at Rigler and program will run from 5:30pm – 8:00pm.

 

In Richmond, California, Ryse Center will be screening Full Circle, a documentary that highlights the positive impact of restorative justice practices in the lives of low-income students of color in Oakland schools at the RYSE Center – 205 41st St. Richmond, CA 94804.
