After a busy weekend, our week of action is going strong with several members kicking off a full week of events today in schools and the community. From Los Angeles to Mississippi, Boston to Pittsburgh and Raleigh, North Carolina, our members are showing that the fight against school pushout is a national movement. On social media today, we are asking folks to #TellTheTruthMonday and lift up the oppression that’s taking place inside and around our schools.
Monday, Oct 22 – Day 3 Events:
Boston, MA – Youth on Board/BSAC and Boston-Area Youth Organizing Project are conducting a Listening Project where students will gather stories from other students about their experiences with school discipline policies. Los Angeles, CA – CADRE (Community Asset Development Re-defining Education) will continue its annual tradition of parent-led classroom observations across 20 targeted schools in South LA, and gather data about classroom climate and classroom-level implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. CADRE parent leaders will share their experience, observations and lessons learned on October 25th. Local District South Schools October 22nd-26th from 8am-3pm.
Los Angeles County, CA – Youth Justice Coalition will be conducting surveys all week of students in continuation schools across LA County – including Probation schools inside juvenile halls, youth prisons and for youth in the community – culminating in a speak out at the end of the week to share the results with the LA County office of education.For more information contact kim@youth4justice.org / gloria@youth4justice.org.
Pittsburgh, PA – Education Rights Network/One PA will be hosting an action at the Pittsburgh School Board Public hearing 5pm-10pm at 341 S Bellefield Ave, Pittsburgh, PA. For more information contact: angel@onepa.org.
Raleigh, NC – Education Justice Alliance and Youth Organizing Institute are organizing a School Justice Partnerships Community Forum to discuss mandates under the NC Raise the Age law, including information about the Wake County Public School System diversion program and solutions to reduce the number of school arrests.
