States, districts and schools have many legally mandated obligations to students and their families to prevent their rights from being violated, and most require money, time, and staff that (especially in these tumultuous economic times) school systems struggle to pull together. At the same time, private companies are popping up saying they can help fill in these gaps at a fraction of the cost. Don’t have the funds for a full-time school counselor? Here is a private company you can subcontract to who will do counseling over video. Don’t have time to draft IEPs for students? Use AI. Don’t have the infrastructure to support a student struggling with conflicts and behavior problems? Send them to a virtual charter school. Don’t have enough school staff to be in the hallways to monitor for safety? Install a surveillance camera that alerts for aggressive affect. The question that has not been answered is whether these solutions are adequate and if they can do more harm than good.

A continuación les presentamos un reporte sobre cómo las escuelas charter virtuales (no presenciales) utilizan la inteligencia artificial en la instrucción cotidiana. Este reporte pone atención, particularmente, a cómo la educación pública se está transformando y adaptando a los nuevos avances tecnológicos, y en qué áreas son ellos más prevalentes. Frecuentemente estos avances tecnológicos tienden a seguir un patrón en el cual se ofrece un servicio de menor calidad como una forma de ajustar el sistema escolar para atender las necesidades de los estudiantes marginados y más vulnerables. En el reporte también se expone la motivación del dinero en la utilización de dichos avances. Es especialmente atractivo para la empresa privada el casi un billón de dólares asignado a la educación pública y por años ha intentado introducir sus servicios y productos en las escuelas públicas para obtener ganancias y echarle mano a estos dineros públicos. ¡Por favor, tómese el tiempo de leerlo!
